Spaceworks was created in 2007 by Bill Fulford – co-founder and current joint owner of Camden Lock – and his son Will, who has worked at Camden Lock since 2000 and has a research background in what makes great markets. Today, Camden Lock is London's fourth-most popular attraction with a worldwide reputation drawing 10 million visitors a year. It has over 60 independent shops, 20 studios, two restaurants/bars, two cafes, the Jongleurs Comedy Club and up to 350 stalls. Not a bad model of success, then!
Spaceworks offers expert consultancy advice while pursuing all kinds of opportunities for market-led development. In the last six months alone it has helped shape the retail strategy for Bath and North East Somerset Council and masterminded the future regeneration of Rathbone Market in London. Will Fulford anticipates a bright future for the new venture:
“The Urban Market Company offers an exciting opportunity to use the power of markets to create great ‘people places’ that are also a hive of economic activity. Markets have a vital role to play in creating sustainable communities, particularly relevant in the current uncertain economic climate.”
